WiFi Speed Test for Streaming

Netflix 4K needs 25 Mbps. Multiple streams in one household need 50–100 Mbps. Test your download speed and see if you qualify for every quality tier.

Speed Requirements by Streaming Platform

Official minimum speeds per quality tier

Netflix

  • SD (480p): 3 Mbps
  • HD (1080p): 5 Mbps
  • 4K Ultra HD: 25 Mbps
  • HDR 4K: 25 Mbps

Netflix uses adaptive bitrate — it will automatically reduce quality if your speed drops.

YouTube

  • 720p HD: 2.5 Mbps
  • 1080p Full HD: 5 Mbps
  • 4K: 20 Mbps
  • 8K: 80 Mbps

YouTube's VP9 codec is very efficient. 4K on YouTube is achievable at lower speeds than Netflix 4K.

Disney+ / Apple TV+

  • SD: 5 Mbps
  • HD (1080p): 10 Mbps
  • 4K UHD: 25 Mbps
  • Dolby Vision 4K: 25 Mbps

Disney+ and Apple TV+ both require the same speeds as Netflix for 4K content.

Twitch / Prime Video

  • Twitch 720p: 4 Mbps
  • Twitch 1080p: 6 Mbps
  • Prime Video HD: 5 Mbps
  • Prime Video 4K: 15 Mbps

Amazon Prime Video uses efficient H.265 encoding — 4K at lower bitrates than competitors.

How Many Streams Can You Run Simultaneously?

If multiple people in your home are streaming at the same time, you need to add the speeds together:

  • 1× 4K Netflix + 1× HD YouTube = 30 Mbps minimum
  • 2× 4K Netflix = 50 Mbps minimum
  • 4× HD streams simultaneously = 40 Mbps minimum
  • Family of 4 with mixed devices = 100 Mbps recommended

These are minimum requirements. For buffer-free streaming with headroom, double the minimum numbers.

Why Streaming Still Buffers at High Speeds

If you're getting 50+ Mbps but still experiencing buffering, the issue is rarely download speed. More common causes:

  • WiFi signal quality: Speed tests show peak performance. A weak 5 GHz signal in another room may deliver 25 Mbps average but drop to 5 Mbps periodically — causing buffers.
  • ISP throttling of streaming services: Some ISPs reduce speed to Netflix or YouTube specifically. Test with a VPN to check — if speed improves, throttling is likely.
  • DNS performance: Slow DNS lookups add latency to the initial connection. Switch to 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare) for faster resolution.
  • Smart TV / streaming device limitations: Older smart TVs have slower WiFi chips. Connect via Ethernet or use a more powerful streaming stick (Chromecast 4K, Fire TV Stick 4K Max).

Reading Your Streaming Speed Test Results

Under 5 Mbps

HD streaming is borderline. 4K streaming will buffer. Prioritise fixing your connection — see our slow WiFi guide.

5–25 Mbps

HD streaming on 1–2 screens works comfortably. 4K is possible on one screen with some buffering risk. Marginal for multi-device households.

25–100 Mbps

4K streaming on multiple screens simultaneously. Comfortable for most households. This range covers 80% of real-world streaming needs.

100+ Mbps

Multiple simultaneous 4K streams, game downloads running in background, video calls — all at once. Future-proofed for any household size.
